Portugese-Jewish Congregation [Portugiesisch-Jüdische Gemeinde] (Hamburg)

The Sephardic unified community Kahal Kadosch Bet Israel (Holy Community of the House of Israel), which was formed on September 3, 1652, from the merger of the three synagogue communities Talmud Tora, Keter Tora, and Neve Salom, consisted of approximately 1,200 members. Shortly thereafter, numerous Iberian Jews from North Africa, Italy, and the Ottoman Empire joined them. After the sale of their synagogue on Markusstraße (18), a private villa on Innocentiastraße (54) served as a religious home for the small remaining community until 1939. In 1942, the Portuguese Jewish community was dissolved.
