Founded in 1817 as the New Israelite Temple Association in Hamburg on the initiative of Dr. Eduard Kley. From 1868 onwards, it bore the name Israelite Temple Association and was legally on an equal footing with the traditional Orthodox Israelite Synagogue Association (Bornplatz Synagogue) in Hamburg.
